All Club Communication - 4.6.21

West Des Lacrosse Club Players and Parents

It’s great to be sending a communication about all of our activities currently underway - much better than a year ago!  I want to thank everyone for your patience and support as we dust off the cobwebs and navigate new waters.  We will continue to operate with optimistic caution but we are happy our players have their sticks in their hands and are back on the field.  We also welcome our new players and parents to the WDM Lacrosse Club!

Our primary means of communication will be through the Team Snap App.  Make sure your email and phone numbers are included.  We will also keep the web site up to date.

COVID REMINDER:  We are still operating under our COVID Action Plan. Players need to wear masks except during physical play.  Coaches and volunteers must wear masks at all times.  If a player is not feeling well or been exposed, please stay home, get tested and promptly report results.  Reports are showing an increase in cases in younger populations, please do not risk our opportunity to play. Always error on the side of caution.  Spectators are required to wear masks at all times during games.  With vaccinations up and many restrictions lifting, its hard to stay vigilant, however, for the safety of our lacrosse family and our season please be COVID smart.

ALL CLUB ACTIVITIES:

Jamboree:  Our first annual Jamboree has been postponed due to an increase in COVID cases in younger children and teens.  While we are disappointed, the safety of our lacrosse family is our primary focus. We will reschedule when it’s appropriate and safe.

Do you have outgrown pinnies hiding your closets?   We need pinnies for your youth games this coming weekend in case our ordered does not arrive in time.  Please send them with your player to the next practice or email the club mailbox, we’ll schedule a time to pick them up.

Unused equipment: Tired of extra helmets, gloves, goggles, sticks etc kicking around your garage?  We will put all lax gear to good use for players who want to try out a few practices before making purchases and future new player clinics.  Email the club mailbox if you have items to donate.

Youth Pictures – April 15, Jordan Creek (weather permitting):  Tim Voland photography will be at Jordan Creek to take individual and team pictures.  Order forms will be sent home prior or you may order online.  (High School Players: if you missed pictures, you may have yours taken as this time as well)

Virtual fundraising 30 POP – April 28! The money we raise during this event directly funds new uniforms, practice equipment, club scholarships for students needing financial assistance and maintaining the program operating budget to help us keep player fees down.  Each player will use the 30 POP platform to send a text message to their list of potential doners.  It’s best if your player creates a list of 10 mobile numbers prior and sends them a personal message letting them know a Lacrosse Fundraising Event will be happening on April 28 and they will receive a text from the player through the fundraising platform asking for a contribution (aka it’s not spam).  All monetary transactions are securely facilitated through the fundraising platform. This is the same vendor who facilitated fundraising for many teams including Valley and Waukee Cross Country.  An on-site representative will lead a 30-minute team building activity with our High School players. For our 3rd through 8th graders, we’ll provide very simple instructions to complete the fundraiser at home in just 7-10 minutes.

Our fundraising efforts will help us purchase the following items in immediate need.

  • 3 Rage Cage 4X4 Collapsible Lacrosse Goal for Youth – ~$120-150 ea
  • 4 Lacrosse Nets ~$100-130 ea.
  • Starter sticks - $20-45 ea
  • Youth girls googles - $30-40 ea
  • Balls, balls, balls

Restaurant Nights:  Watch for upcoming specials at local restaurants like Blaze Pizza and Chipotle.  Proceeds from our designated evening’s sales will go to WDM Lacrosse Club. More details will be communicated as the dates get determined.

Youth Parents:  Your coaches need your help at practice and game day.  No lacrosse experience needed!  Practice help incudes setting up/striking nets, chasing balls and helping players stay focused.  Game day help includes setting up the field, running the score/clock, striking the field and always ball chasing.  If you don’t know the game, it’s a great way to learn!

Special shout out to our volunteer coaches and parents!

Taylor Hatch, former WDM player and Waukee graduate is our girl’s youth coach and parent Tammy Pfiffer has agreed to assist.   Izzy Wilson former WDM player and Valley graduate as agreed to help middle school coach Laura DePenning.

Jarod Smith, former WDM player and Valley graduate has volunteered to be our boys middle school coach.  Zach Hoover has volunteered to coach our youth boys.

All youth coaches need and welcome parents to help during practices and game.  Please raise your hand by letting your coach know or email us at the club email.

Know someone who is a sports official/referee for soccer, hockey or another sport??  Iowa Lacrosse needs more girl’s and boy’s officials.  If you know anyone who would like to earn some extra money in their pocket, help develop our future Iowa lacrosse athletes and have some fun while exercising, contact Beech Turner at ILAX for more information (iowalaxassoc@gmail.com).

High School Parents

As expected, the season is starting off with constant scheduling changes for both girls and boys.  Officials continue to be challenge for both leagues as well.  Our goal is to try to reschedule as much as we can to give our players plenty of game experiences.  We will continue to communicate changes as they come about through Team Snap.

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help setup/strike the fields, manage the game clock, keep stats and film the games.  We have plenty more opportunities and we can use everyone’s help.  Please let Paul O’Connell or Ryan Praska know what games you are available – home or away.

Senior Day – This year we have 7 seniors: 2 girls and 5 boys.  Due to scheduling conflicts we will not be able to honor our seniors together.  The girl’s senior day will be April 22 @ Tiger Field, 7pm prior to game.  The boy’s senior day will be May 1 @ Tiger Field following the Varsity game ~10:30am.  Parents watch for information to order your senior’s poster to display on this special day.

Let’s have a great season.  Go WDM Lacrosse Teams!

About US

The West Des Moines Lacrosse Club (WDMLAX) fields boys and girls teams for players in grades 3-12. We offer programs for youth, middle school and high school.  The club is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501c3 organization, and strives to provide players with the best coaching, facilities, and competition available.  WDMLAX is a member of several leagues based on gender and age of the players.  We welcome players from various communities and schools in central Iowa. Regardless of whether you've played the game before, you are welcome to join our club or join us for a practice to see if you like the sport.  We are not affliated nor sponsored by a school district, however, we utlize West Des Moines School District facilities and thank them for their support to grow the sport of lacrosse in Iowa.  See the About Us page for more information about our programs
